Yllka Lohaj, a UN Development Coordinator for a Day
Echoing in the sentiments of International Women's Day.
Yllka Lohaj, a bright young woman, found herself in the office of Ms. Arnhild Spence, the UN Development Coordinator, during a session, as set up by the British Embassy's "Ambassador for a Day" initiative.
This meeting, surpassing mere formalities, delved into the complexities of reconciliation and youth empowerment. Ms. Spence and Yllka engaged in a profound discussion on the essential role of the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) youth programme. The initiative is a pragmatic platform enabling young people of different ethnic backgrounds to forge friendships and mutual understanding, shattering long-held prejudices.
Talking to Ms Arnhild Spence, Yllka quoted a D’Angelo McDade, a young activist in Chicago, who once said: “We, as youth, must now be the change that we seek. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”
The conversation inevitably turned towards the prevalent disenfranchisement among Kosovo's youth. A palpable sense of futility pervades the young generation, due to the shortcomings of youth in political engagement and the critical need for inspirational figures. Yllka, with her zeal and insights, exemplified the potential of Kosovo’s youth, ready to be harnessed.
The ethos of March 8th - International Women's Day, underscored the necessity of empowering young women like Yllka, who represent not only gender equality but also the potential to transcend divisions.
The session with Ms. Spence is a testament to the power of dialogue and the importance of platforms that facilitate such interactions. For Yllka and many others, these platforms are more than just venues for conversation; they are inspiration in action for future leaders who will carry the torch of development through reconciliation, understanding, and peace.
With events like the "Ambassador for a Day," hope is more than a concept; it’s a tangible reality being shaped by young, determined individuals like Yllka Lohaj.
On this International Women's Day, let's not only celebrate the achievements of women across the globe but also recognize and support the young minds who are actively shaping a world of inclusivity, understanding, and lasting peace.
