In the heart of the city of Pristina, amidst the buzz of construction, a remarkable project is taking shape. The European Union and University of Pristina funded project for the Construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) is not just another addition to the educational landscape; it represents a significant milestone in fostering diversity and inclusion within the construction industry and a paradigm shift towards embracing gender equality in infrastructure.
UNOPS Women Engineers Leading the Way
Verona Ymeri Hoxha, an experienced project manager, and Besa Ajvazi Selimi, a skilled project engineer, are the driving forces behind this remarkable endeavor. With their passion, unwavering dedication, and exceptional expertise, they have earned key roles in shaping the FMNS building. Verona's leadership skills and Besa's expertise make them an unstoppable duo, challenging stereotypes and redefining the role of women in engineering. As the project manager, Verona's extensive experience ensures the smooth coordination and adherence to the highest standards of quality and safety. Collaborating closely with all Project Stakeholders (donors, beneficiaries, contractors, and professionals), she creates an environment conducive to efficient construction processes. When asked about her role in this momentous project, Verona expressed her deep fulfillment, acknowledging the transformative impact the FMNS building will have on students and the community. She further noted that they have made a conscious effort to ensure gender-neutral spaces and facilities that cater to the needs of everyone.
“I believe the FMNS building will have a transformative impact on both students and the community. It will provide a valuable learning environment, equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources, enabling students to explore and excel in the fields of math and natural sciences. Additionally, the facility will serve as a center for scientific research and collaboration, fostering innovation and contributing to the overall growth of the community. I hope it becomes a source of inspiration, encouraging curiosity, and empowering the next generation of scientists.” – said Verona.
Besa, the project engineer, brings the project’s vision to life with meticulous attention to detail and problem-solving skills. She is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of the construction process, ensuring that the design specifications are implemented accurately. Verona and Besa have encountered numerous challenges throughout their careers. Skepticism, gender bias, and preconceived notions have posed obstacles on their path. However, their determination and resilience have enabled them to overcome these barriers and serve as an inspiration to aspiring women engineers and trailblazers in all fields. Their achievements stand as a testament to the power of breaking down societal norms and effecting positive change.
The Significance of Diversity and Inclusion
By embracing a diverse team, the FMNS project has harnessed a range of perspectives, resulting in innovative and sustainable solutions. Verona and Besa played an important role in incorporating gender-friendly design elements into the FMNS building. It is through inclusivity that the industry can tap into a vast pool of talent and ideas, driving progress and redefining traditional norms. When asked for advice to give to future women engineers Besa stated: “For aspiring women engineers considering a career in the construction industry, I offer this advice: Have faith in yourself and your capabilities. The construction industry, much like any other, thrives on diversity and varied perspectives. Your contributions hold immense value, and by working together, we can foster a construction sector that is more inclusive and diverse.” As the FMNS building progresses along, it stands for inclusivity, and innovation. UNOPS women engineers demonstrate the power that comes with education, hard work and dedication.. Their story serves as a powerful reminder that when barriers are shattered, possibilities become limitless, inspiring generations to dream big and pursue their passions.
