Beyond Borders: Yamal and Elias's Journey of Inclusion and Dreams
01 March 2024
Why is it important to tell this story of children's inclusion?
When individuals are compelled to leave their country of origin and seek refuge elsewhere, they often find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. Overcoming these initial feelings requires being treated with dignity and respect, much like everyone else. However, the integration process is difficult and demands significant effort, including learning the host place's language, grasping its culture, understanding the economic inclusion opportunities, and actively participating in the community.
Today, we share the story of Yamal and Elias.
Forced to flee their homeland, these two energetic boys have little understanding of why their family had to escape. Arriving in the historic city of Prizren, they were unaware of the complexities their parents faced in finding a safe haven. They may not even realize the obstacles they might encounter in enrolling in school or securing adequate housing. However, their faces light up when they see UNHCR and partner staff during regular interactions with the family.
Yamal and Elias, both young, love interacting with their peers, continuing their education, and playing soccer. “I enjoy playing soccer and being with my teammates – says Yamal – I would like to become a great player like Ronaldo.”
“Integration isn’t a straightforward process, yet it is incredibly vital. At times, the primary challenge is being labelled as "the foreigner," overlooking the fact that, like every other human being, refugees have much to offer to society. Despite its importance, achieving inclusion can be challenging in many cases. However, it can be attained with minor support, such as access to sport activities.” - states Merita, the Protection Officer at UNHCR Office of the Chief of Mission in Pristina.
“Surprisingly, they no longer need assistance with Arabic interpretation; even their parents are gradually becoming proficient in the local language and customs.” - emphasizes Imran, the Cultural mediator at KRCT partner organization.
The social support provided by UNHCR partner staff, like Fatmir and Mimoza, feels more like a real friendly conversation. “We aim the integration of the refugees, assured that they have a lot to offer to the hosting society” – states Fatmir. “Working on integration is a holistic approach that needs time, efforts, and lot of empathy – states the UNHCR protection Staff Nazan - But if there's a will, there's a way.”
Recognizing the importance of inclusion, the UNHCR Office of the Chief of Mission in Pristina ensures children are enrolled in school and extracurricular activities, including a football club in Prizren. Initially facilitated by the UNHCR, the sports club now offers boys to attend training and sports activities free of charge.
When asked about the FC_Prizren's motivation for this support, the coach, Mr. Agron Beseni, replied, “Why not?! We care about children… There is no importance placed on skin colour, race, religion, or ethnicity to the kindness of humanity, especially towards kids. And there should not impede welcoming and hosting individuals who are forced to leave their homes.”
During the discussions about the future ahead, Yamal, smiling, says: “I love painting, and I would love to draw cartoons for children.”Meanwhile, Elias enters the conversation and reveals his dream: “I like anime drawing too, but I would love to become a veterinarian”. In this vibrant environment, they nurture dreams for the future. Both are eager to contribute to their host society like any other member.
Witnessing Yamal and Elias engage with their teammates, cheering on goals and forging bonds through sport is heartwarming. Their satisfaction is evident as they spend quality time with their peers at the football club and school.
By sharing this story, we underscore the importance of sports inclusion and its positive impact on individuals forced to flee their homes.
Through this narrative, the UNHCR emphasizes the significance of community integration and coexistence with the host community and its positive influence on individuals compelled to leave their homes. These young souls uprooted from their homes and communities, carry the seeds of resilience and hope within them. By shielding them from harm, providing education, and nurturing their emotional healing, we protect their present and sow the promise of a more compassionate and stable future.
Yamal and Elias, your dreams are the compass guiding you toward a brighter tomorrow!
